It’s the summer of 1987. You’re 10, 11, maybe 12 years old, with a couple of bucks in your pocket. You and your buddies hop on your bikes and ride over to your LCS. It’s $.02 or $.05 common day and you’re hunting for treasures. In the 1987 Topps Boxes, you find a Bo Jackson Future Stars card. It’s gotta be worth $1.25, maybe even $2.00 and you just snagged it for pennies.
Later that summer, you’ve gotten $10 from somewhere. Maybe you mowed a few lawns or a relative at a family reunion slipped you the cash–doesn’t matter how you got it, because you’re about to spend it. You buy a vending box: 500 cards, they’re all yours and there’s no gum to ruin any of them. You search through carefully and find a Will Clark rookie, then a Jose Canseco Rookie Cup card, a Wally Joyner Rookie Cup, a Barry Bonds rookie and even a couple more Bo Jackson Future Stars cards.
In both cases, you were ecstatic, on top of the world. All these years later, you’ve had great moments, even some triumphant ones, but nothing quite matches the joy of scoring those finds. You start thinking about cards again: the Bo Jacksons, the Don Mattinglys, the Doc Goodens. It turns out they aren’t worth what you thought they would be, so they’re all affordable now. You start picking some up, just for the nostalgia and soon, you’re hooked again.
If you ever rejoiced over finding a mint condition rookie, blew your whole allowance at the card store, or chewed stick after stick of stale bubble gum, this is the place for you. Welcome to:
